More details:
Bob Dylan's American Journey, 1956-1966Experience Music Project presents Bob Dylan’s American Journey, 1956-1966, which has traveled to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City and the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis. >> Click here for detailed exhibition specifications and logistical information. Few figures in the history of American popular music have reached the status of Bob Dylan. As the man who showed the world that popular music could be classified as art, Dylan has created a distinctly American body of work to match the legacies of Walt Whitman, Louis Armstrong, and his early musical hero, Woody Guthrie. Many people have declared Dylan’s lyrics to be poetry; his songs also unearth and revitalize the American folk and blues tradition, serving as a key link in the chain that extends from Southern work songs, blues and Anglo American ballads to the many contemporary singer-songwriters for whom Dylan is a main influence. But Dylan’s story is not simply that of a musical evolution. As a public figure and artistic innovator, he has taken and chronicled a journey emblematic of modern America’s own development. Bob Dylan’s American Journey, 1956-1966, features more than 150 artifacts, including Dylan’s 1949 Martin 00-17 guitar, typed and handwritten lyrics, rare concert posters and handbills, signed albums, and dozens of photographs, as well as unique artifacts from artists such as Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie, Carolyn Hester, Bruce Langhorne and D. A. Pennebaker. The exhibition features five films exploring different facets of Bob Dylan’s career, with rare performance footage and interviews with Dylan and other key artists such as Baez, Langhorne and Robbie Robertson. In addition to the films, two viewing stations allow visitors to watch excerpts from the Dylan films Dont Look Back and Eat the Document, as well as excerpts of interviews with Dylan reflecting on his early career. Throughout the exhibition space are six listening stations that enable visitors to hear Dylan’s musical evolution and innovations during this 10-year period. Each station includes tracks from his first seven albums, as well as outtakes, bootlegs, cover versions and other songs that influenced Dylan’s work. An hour-long audio tour features Bob Dylan and other artists and individuals such as Joan Baez, Allen Ginsberg, Al Kooper, Robbie Robertson, Mavis Staples and Izzy Young, sharing their stories and insights about Dylan, music and the turbulent sixties. Bank of America to acquire Countrywide

Bank of America is set to acquire Countrywide. More details to follow.

Mozilo stands to make $115 million from the deal.

Does Countrywide have a choice? What is in for the employees of Countrywide? Many have lost their jobs over the last year as the mortgage crises continues.

Seeing the stock price of Countrywide tumble to under $8 having gone as high as almost $43 last year. Over 80% off the high.

We will see how things develop in this move. I have a Bank of America mortgage and have had no problems. I previously had a CountryWide mortgage and was not happy with the way I was treated. In addition to the class action lawsuit that is ongoing Countrywide is facing some challenges.

The $129 Kodak EasyShare M763 has a 2.7-inch LCD and face detection technology. The camera comes in 6 colors, and the rep told me it's Kodak's answer to Canon's SD1000, though about $50-$70 cheaper.

Honda Civic Tour 2008

PANIC AT THE DISCO GOES COAST-TO-COAST IN ECO-FRIENDLY FAST LANE
AS HEADLINER OF 8TH ANNUAL HONDA CIVIC TOUR

Honda Civic Hybrid Customized by Panic At The Disco to Be Won by Lucky Fan

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 10, 2008 — Start your engines as Panic At The Disco leaves Sin City for center stage as headliner for the 8th annual Honda Civic Tour. American Honda Motor Co., Inc. announced the participation of the platinum-selling, MTV Video Music Award-winning band today at the company’s U.S. headquarters in Torrance, Calif. The event featured the unveiling of the Panic At The Disco customized and autographed Honda Civic Hybrid and a surprise performance by the Las Vegas-bred quartet which was hosted by Honda Civic Tour alum Mark Hoppus of +44 and Blink-182.

The Honda Civic Tour (HCT) continues to provide fans with a unique, interactive concert experience, allowing them to get up close and personal with their favorite bands. Panic At The Disco (PATD) will take the stage with material from their highly anticipated sophomore album, PRETTY. ODD., the follow-up to 2005’s A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. Advance word on the new disc promises songs particularly well suited to live performance, which Honda Civic Tour fans will be the first to confirm as the band brings their dynamic stage show to intimate venues throughout the U.S. The tour kicks off April 10th in San Francisco at the Warfield Theatre and will close with an unforgettable performance at The Honda Center in Anaheim, Ca. on June 14th. Full schedule, on-sale dates and support acts will be announced at a later date.

Over the past seven years nearly two million fans have enjoyed the HCT experience, and the tour has developed a reputation for putting fans first as an entertainment brand backed by Honda. The eighth year demonstrates the consistent annual commitment Honda has made to developing and supporting emerging music artists. This commitment will be demonstrated yet again with tickets priced for maximum affordability.

Said Panic At The Disco lead singer Brendon Urie: “We’re taking advice from Fall Out Boy, who headlined the Honda Civic Tour last year, on how to make this year’s tour even better. Those guys set the bar pretty high, but we’re really looking forward to hitting the road again and are definitely up for the challenge.” Guitarist Ryan Ross commented: “We were just kids when we went to see Good Charlotte and New Found Glory in Vegas during the ’03 Civic Tour so it’s pretty amazing to now be headlining.”

Beyond great music, this year’s Honda Civic Tour is also deploying an environmental action plan. In the tradition of the past three Honda Civic Tours featuring the Civic Hybrid, the ’08 trek is aimed at effecting positive environmental change. New for this year, nonprofits Reverb (a leader in the “greening” of concert tours) and Global Inheritance (a champion of progressive causes with a tight connection to youth subcultures) have been selected by Panic At The Disco. They are collaborating to engage audiences in fun, fan-friendly, interactive exhibits during the tour. Additionally, this collective will make a substantial contribution to a cause to be determined by the end of the tour. The concept chosen will be selected on its merit to make a lasting impact on the generation-defining environmental movement in the name of the 2008 Honda Civic Tour with Panic At The Disco.

Tickets will equal action. For every Honda Civic Tour Panic At The Disco ticket purchased, $1 will go into a fund designated for non-profit tour partners Reverb and Global Inheritance. Being green does not get any easier than buying a ticket to the ’08 Honda Civic Tour!

In keeping with one of the Honda Civic Tour’s most exciting traditions, Panic At The Disco has designed a special, one-of-a-kind Honda Civic Hybrid to be showcased at each stop of the tour. Fans will have the opportunity throughout the tour to enter to win this green machine, which has been autographed by the band, making it the ultimate in HCT memorabilia. The PATD-personalized hybrid was unveiled to select Honda associates and the press at today’s announcement event.

The most up to date HCT news can be found at www.hondacivictour.com, and, on Jan. 30, beginning at 10 a.m. PST fans can register online to participate in a ticket pre-sale.

Panic At The Disco’s platinum-selling debut, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out (Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen), spawned multiple radio and video hits, among them “I Write Sins Not Tragedies,” which went to #1 on MTV and was named Video of the Year at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. The band has previously been featured on the covers of Rolling Stone, Spin and Alternative Press and is nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Boxed or Limited Edition Package” for A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out at the upcoming awards ceremony taking place on February 10th.

Past Honda Civic Tour headliners include The Black Eyed Peas, Blink-182, Everclear, Incubus, Good Charlotte and New Found Glory, Dashboard Confessional, Maroon 5, and most recently, Fall Out Boy.

Produced by Marketing Factory, the Honda Civic Tour brings innovation and environmental consciousness to the masses by combining the hottest in automotive technology with the hottest in music.

Wikia

Critics Wallop Wikia - these are the headlines we are reading....

I have been to Wikia and tried it out. It appears to need some work, but it does look promising.

I will hold out judgment on the search engine, as I know the team behind the project is more than capable of pulling off an putting together a great product. Specialized niche search results are a thing more and more people are going to be looking for.

Print Jobs stuck in spooler

Have you tried to print a document and not been able to? Perhaps there is a job in the print que holding things up.

Try this...

Turn off the Print Spooler in Services under Administrative Tools.
Use Windows Explorer to go to System32\Spool\Printers to delete the offending jobs. Stopping the Print Spooler service Turn on the Fax Service, so turn it back on after Starting the Print Spooler again.
If this fails remove and reinstall the printer driver.

MacWorld San Francisco 2008

While CES is going on in Las Vegas, Apple is having their conference in San Francisco.

At Moscone center you will find the latest gadgets and announcements from Apple.

New Mac Pro - A new Mac Pro. I'm going to buy one of these (assuming they contain 45nm CPUs), so they damn well better be introduced.

New displays - New Apple external displays. I have grave doubts about this one (see later square), but the existing line desperately needs updating.

HD video somewhere - High-definition video appears on some piece of Apple hardware or software. It must be explicitly described as "HD" or "high-definition." HD video for sale in the iTunes store counts.

MacBook Thin - A new subnotebook from Apple, regardless of its actual branding or product name. What's a subnotebook? Use your own judgement. The only restriction I'll add is that it must have a hardware keyboard.

New MacBook Pro - Any revision to the MacBook Pro product line.

Multi-touch Mac - Any Mac that includes a feature described as "multi-touch" or even just "touch." It can be a screen, trackpad, whatever.

"Wouldn't it be great...?" - Steve Jobs begins his favorite rhetorical question.

MacBook Thin has flash - The subnotebook (described in the "MacBook Thin" square above) contains some nontrivial amount of flash RAM.

"One more thing..." - Steve Jobs says there's "one more thing." A slide containing the phrase is also acceptable, even if Jobs does not actually say it.

New Apple TV - The moribund Apple TV is revised or replaced with a new product that does the same sort of things.

Movie Rentals - Apple rents downloadable movies from the iTunes store.

"Boom" - Steve Jobs says the word "boom" while demonstrating something.

Existence of Xserve acknowledged - The Xserve or Xserve RAID is mentioned by a presenter, listed on a slide, or even just appears in a photo, illustration, or screenshot.

Blu-ray - Sony's Blu-ray disc format is mentioned by a presenter. (Text or a logo on a slide does not count.)

iPhone SDK details - Significant new information about the iPhone SDK.

New displays have cameras - New Apple displays with built-in or otherwise attached cameras.

New iPhone - New iPhone hardware. Even minor revisions count.

Mac market share touted - Good news about the market share of Macintosh computers is presented.

Optical drive sold separately - An Apple-branded external optical drive is introduced and is available for individual sale.

Schiller - Phil Schiller appears on stage or in live video. (Pre-recorded segments do not count.)

Leopard vs. Vista - Mac OS X 10.5 is compared to Vista in some way. Showing one of the Mac/PC TV ads does not count. The comparison must be part of the live presentation.

Dockable Mac - Some hardware product that runs Mac OS X docks to some other piece of hardware.

Native third-party iPhone app demo - A demonstration of an OS X application written by a third-party, or written by Apple as an example of what could be written using the new iPhone SDK.

No new displays - No new Apple external display products are introduced. (Rioting optional.)

Yahoo Life! Yahoo Go!

Starting today, any publisher can make “widgets” that plug into Yahoo! Go! Showing some icons on screen of eBay (EBAY), News Corp.’s (NWS) MySpace, and Viacoms (VIA.B) MTV. Been working in partnership with eBay, Viacom and News for past few months, have some widgets developed with them.

A “widget” is a fully fledged mobile app, Boris is insisting — “Everything I do on my PC I can now do on my mobile phone.” Showing off MySpace, friend requests. Yang: “We have the potential for many, many developers to join this.”

Yahoo! Go! available on over 300 devices. Yahoo! Go 3.0 will be offered on over 30 devices when it goes live. As part of the developer strategy, also manage to runs the widgets on any phone with a Web browser, which means a phone doesn’t have to have the Yahoo! Go! code on it. Able to call up one’s personalized list of widgets from any phone.

Working with LG Electronics and other phone vendors to make widgets run natively on phones.

Yang points adds are running on the user interface of the phone, segueing into mobile advertising. Taking technology for widget developers and giving it to advertisers to make “rich ads.” In the demo, clicking on the “stores” link for an advertisor leads to a scrollable map of store locations.

You’ll be able to check out a beta version of 3.0 later today by directing your phone’s browser to http://beta.m.yahoo.com

CES Show Las Vegas 2008

CES is off! Lots of new stuff coming out of Vegas.

I'll try to bring you some of the interesting announcements.

S&W Followup

iPod-iPhone display protection invisible zagg

Thanks to Steve Bass for this:

I'm at the Consumer Electronics Show, finding the products that you
(and I) can use. I spent three hours at CES Unveiled last night --
along with 40,000 other journalists crammed a too-small banquet room.
(Oh, what I do for you…)

I spotted the Invisible Shield, a super thin transparent film that
protects electronic devices -- the ubiquitous iPod, iPhone, cell
phones, digital cameras… you get the idea.

It has a lifetime warranty and purported to be scratch-proof. I
watched as a company rep used a ballpoint pen and tried scratching
the Invisible Shield. From the short demo, it worked.

The invisible shield is cheap -- anywhere between $10 and $25,
depending on the device. You can buy one on their site and get a
50-percent discount one week after the CES show closes.

Botulism - canned tomatoes S&W

This morning I was looking through some cans in the garage and pantry and found that the S&W Premium Ready-Cut Diced Tomatoes cans was bulging. I sent an email contact to http://www.swfinefoods.com/ to see how they handle these sorts of situations.
Call 800- 252-7033
Monday - Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm ET
Write
S&W Fine Foods Consumer ServicesP.O. Box 193575San Francisco, CA 94119-3575

The cans I have are Best By Mar 31 09
With a code 5B 6228H8 19:54

Then I did some research and found the following.

Cans bulge primarily because of a potentially deadly bacteria fermenting in it, which causes a type of food poisoning known as Botulism. DO NOT PURCHASE A CAN WITH BULGES. Botulism can kill you.

botulism /bot·u·lism/ (boch´ah-lizm) an extremely severe type of food poisoning due to a neurotoxin (botulin) produced by Clostridium botulinum in improperly canned or preserved foods.

There is lots of info about this topic. They all say the same thing, do not purchase or eat a can that has expanded/bulged it could make you very sick or ill.

AT&T Poor Customer Service Experience

I must say that I have not been too happy with the folks at AT&T.

Recently my wife decided to switch over to t-mobile from AT&T, to try to save some money and be on the same service as me.

Last month we received a bill for $7.95, after we closed the account. I tried to go online to pay the amount and the account was no longer active. So I called AT&T and asked them why they make it so difficult, I guess that was a dumb question.
So I asked the representative if he could credit the balance and close the account. He said he would see what he could do and within a few minutes he said it was all set. I left with a good feeling about AT&T, they tried to leave things in good standing with a customer(I am still an AT&T customer for home phone and DSL service, although not sure how much longer, based on this treatment).
So in the mail yesterday we received a bill for $1.00!!! I was shocked. So I called AT&T and asked why we received the bill, 90 cents + 10 cents tax! I said you have to be kidding, you want me to send a check for $1 and spend $.41 cents to send it?
The rep said they could accept the credit card I had used on the account. At this point I thought, you know I don't have the patience to deal with this just pay it, so i did.

Then I started thinking about it more and how the call was handled by the rep.

The fact that one rep can close the account and tell me that everything is closed and I will not be receiving any more bills. The other rep tells me that I owe money.

Here's the message to AT&T, there has to be some reasonable consideration for customers and the general public.

DVD Play Promo Codes

I've been using DVDPlay for a few months. I go to the Vons in Pasadena, usually on Colorado and Sierra Madre. They seem to have a pretty good stock.
Apparently they have taken down all the promo codes from the kiosk and none of the ones that I recently received worked, so I decided to do a search online and found a few links and codes which I will try next time.

http://www.dvdplay.com/dvd-rental-machine/kiosk-promocodes.html - I don't see any promo codes currently listed.

Also, if you happen to have a Redbox (same idea as DVDPlay) nearby, you can get codes from InsideRedbox [ http://www.insideredbox.com/ ].

One of the things I don't like about the service is having to return the rentals by 7pm the next day, if they are not returned at 7pm you get charged the full price rental. So last week we rented two movies. I had a promo code, so two movies came out to $1.60, we did not return by 7pm and my credit card was charged twice for $1.07. Perhaps DVDPlay can offer another day for $.50 extra, or some way to not have to pay the full rental price, or at least offer a grace period of an hour. I don't know how they came up with 7pm.

Blaine Baggett - JPL and the Beginnings of the Space Age

Thursday, January 24, 2008 at 8:00 PM Beckman AuditoriumFREE; no tickets or reservations required

Our premier public screening of the new documentary JPL and the Beginnings of the Space Age, almost exactly 50 years after the launch of Explorer 1, will be followed by discussion and Q&A with writer, producer, and director Blaine Baggett, JPL's Executive Manager of Communications.
At the end of World War II, the fledging efforts of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory were at a crossroads. Should this outgrowth of Caltech, involved in building rockets for the U.S. Army, continue on in peace time? The answer came with the coming of the Cold War. JPL would continue its Army rocket development, culminating with the Corporal and Sergeant missiles, which were deployed in Europe as a nuclear deterrent to the Eastern Bloc.
But by 1956 JPL was already seeking a new, non-military role and had set its ambitions on teaming with the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama to launch the first satellite into space. Denied that opportunity in 1956 by the Eisenhower administration, JPL and the Von Braun rocket teams could only watch in frustration as the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the world's first satellite, in October 1957.
Following the explosion of the U.S. Vanguard rocket just weeks after Sputnik, the White House in desperation turn to the JPL and Huntsville team, which successfully launched Explorer 1 into orbit less than 90 days after being given the go-ahead. The discovery by Explorer 1's instruments of what came to be known as the Van Allen radiation belts was the world's first space science, and set JPL on the path to become the world's preeminent explorer of the solar system and beyond.

New Law for phones and driving

Thanks to the News-Sentinel staff for this overview of the new law coming July 1.

New cell phone laws at a glance
The countdown to New Year's came and went this week, and now a new clock is ticking: In six months, it will become illegal to drive while holding a cell phone to the ear.
In other words, you have until July 1 to buy a hands-free device, or buy a whole new phone if it doesn't work with such devices. Teenagers cannot use any communication device, even with hands-free devices.
The July 1 date has been widely publicized since the law was passed a year ago, but law enforcement officials say they are still being deluged by calls from people who think the law started this week. Some thought it started in July 2007, and some even thought it went into effect a year ago.
The bottom line is that, after July 1, if a cop sees you holding a cell phone while driving, you can be ticketed. You must use a hands-free device so that you do not have to hold the phone while driving.
Most phones have a place to plug in an earpiece, and many now use Bluetooth technology, which does not require wires. Headphones won't work, as California law does not allow drivers to use headphones on both ears.
But teenagers don't need to bother investing in hands-free equipment — on July 1 it will become illegal for those under age 18 to use any kind of communication device while driving.
The only exception to both laws is during an emergency.
The base fine for each offense starts at $20, which doesn't sound too steep, but that doesn't count various state and court fees. Once they are tacked on, the total fine will be well over $50. For subsequent violations, the fine will more than double.
— News-Sentinel staff.

Cell phones and your commute

New study came out that our commutes are extended 10-15min on average due to people talking on their phones.

Remember that you must use a hands free device starting July 1, 2008, at least in the California.

Here's a link to the various stories on the topic.

More Street Racing News

Over the weekend, there was another street race in Hollywood. One killed, and multiple injuries.

Witnesses ; Firey street racing crash in Hollywood
One person died and another seriously burned in a collision at a Hollywood intersection. In all, four people were involved in the 3-car crash. Authorities on the scene suspect street racing is to blame. (Dec. 29)

John Bisnar has a good blog post about this topic. This type of behavior needs to end. The roads are dangerous enough without having people racing!

As a business and investment vehicle, is it farfetched to credit social networking with value and staying power? The rise and demise of Friendster begs the question whether MySpace will be similarly dethroned by FaceBook. Meanwhile, might LinkedIn emerge as "tortoise" in the race? And might one of today's many soc-net startup alternatives emerge to be the Google of the genre? Whatever you thought were answers, the appearance of OpenSocial as a platform giving common access between entrepreneurs and network members adds a dimension threatening to squelch the skeptics. For example, by adopting this model (long ago used by dBase-Lotus), Facebook has cultivated thousands of third party applications.

Our keynote speakers and panelists will look at the soc-net paradigm from the vantage point of successful entrepreneurs and investors in this arena. They will wrestle with the many-faceted answers to these and related questions.

Attempt to Stop Spam

How many of you have tried to stop spam? Most likely many of you.

I am working on one of my accounts that does get emails that I don't want. So I am making an attempt to unsubscribe to as many of the emails as possible in an attempt to reduce all the unwanted emails.

I'll report back.....

A cool tool would be one that would flag the emails as spam/junk email and also make all attempts to unsubscribe you from the list. If you can do this with one click that would be great.

Street Racing in South Pasadena

I'm watching the news this morning. Two street racers going through South Pasadena at high speeds at the intersection of Freemont and Monterey crashed into a innocent driver.

What are the authorities doing to catch these people and punish this sort behavior? Not enough, because the behavior continues. I hear about this daily in the news.

I say if you are caught street racing your license and car should be taken away for life.

There are places like the Irwindale Speedway that offer people a chance to race against others in a safer environment.

The streets is not the place for racing of any type.

Costco and recycle your old computer

Old PC in the closet? Here's a way to get rid of it: Sell it to Costco.

Costco, has partnered with Greensight to recondition or recycle your old, but still working, PC. They'll pick up the tab on shipping the PC to them and pay you for the computer.

They take notebooks, MP3 players, LCD monitors, camcorders, digital cameras, game consoles, and phones.

It's gets better yet: There's no trade-in value, but if you have an old CRT, printer, or fax machine, Greensight will recycle it for you and pay to ship the item to them.
The catch: You get "paid" with a Costco cash card. If you're not a Costco member, you can use the cash card towards the membership fee; members can use the card to buy merchandise.

Happy New Year 2008

Happy New Year Everyone!

It is now 2008 and the weather here in Southern California, Pasadena is amazing. Some high clouds but very nice.

This morning we attended(Victor Caballero, Jennifer Caballero, Justin Caballero and Gracie Bradley) the 119th Rose Parade, we saw the begining of the parade from our seats in section 399, near the Norton Simon Museum.

The seats are pretty good, but not as good as being on the other side of the street, as that is the side the cameras are on. They have to have the best side there.

I'll have some more pictures and even some video of the parade coming.

Vinturi Wine Aerator - review and info

Vinturi Wine Aerator

Includes: Vinturi, no-drip stand, and carry pouch.

Wine Needs to Breathe Wine which has been allowed to breathe tastes better. As wine breathes, it opens up, and releases its intended aromas and flavors. traditionally, decanters were used to aerate wine. However, decanting is time consuming, cumbersome, and inconvenient. Vinturi's patent pending design speeds up this process with ease and convenience. Perfect aeration in the time it takes to pour a glass. All the taste with none of the wait. Simply hold vinturi over a glass and pour wine through. vinturi draws in and mixes the proper amount of air for the right amount of time, allowing your wine to breathe instantly. You'll notice a better bouquet, enhanced flavors and smoother finish. It's that fast. It's that easy. When wine is poured in the vinturi, its design creates an increase in the wine's velocity and a decrease in its pressure. This pressure difference draws in air, which is mixed with wine for perfect aeration. What really matters is vinturi's affect on wine. Better Bouquet Sample the nose. You'll appreciate the subtle aeromatic differences and the full aroma of the wine. Vinturi allows wine to display its intended aromas. Enhanced Flavors Go ahead, take a sip. Vinturi's wine tastes better. It is more flavorful and has better mouthfeel. It tastes like a richer, more expensive wine. It tastes like it was intended to and is more enjoyable. Smoother Finish Ahh. Vinturi's aeration is very effective at softening tannins which results in a much more pleasant finish. Any bitterness or bad aftertaste is reduced or eliminated.

Thankfully the grave site situation is resolved

Upon our return to the Prairie Cemetery we found that the dirt and mess was removed from our aunt's grave site, and we were able to pay proper respects and say a prayer together as a family. It was unfortunate to have had this experience but we will be returning in years to come.

Funeral Home and Cemetary Situation

My wife Jennifer Caballero and I are in Astoria, OR visiting my Uncle Felix who recently lost his wife Eileen Caballero. So today we decided to take some flowers to the grave site where Eileen was buried. She was buried last month at the Prairie Cemetery in Knappa, Oregon, which is located between Astoria and and Clastskanie. It's a small cemetery with less than 100 plots. There really isn't even parking.

At about 12noon we drove out and to our shock and dismay the grave site was covered with about 5' of dirt from a grave site next to the one for our family member. To top things off the tombstone had about 4' of sod stacked on top.

To say we were a little upset is an understatement. There is no contact info at the cemetery or office, nothing. There is a private road next to the cemetery where people drive to get to a private residence.

So we decided to stop by the funeral home, Caldwell Funeral Homes in Astoria. Owned and operated by Renee Caldwell.

Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary & North Coast Crematory
1165 Franklin Ave. • Astoria, Oregon 97103 Phone (503) 325-1811 • Fax (503) 325-2275 The Caldwell family has owned and operated the funeral home since 1976.

As a principal of the business, Renee acted very unprofessionally in my opinion, basically handing the phone to my wife to leave a message for the "manager" of the cemetery. Renee, get with the program on customer service and being proactive. We brought pictures and video of the situation. Why Renee didn't take control of the situation and have an immediate resolution is beyond me. I decided to confront Renee and speak up, asking her to take control and resolve the situation, and yes I was a little angry and emotional about it. She basically walked away and said that she would call the police if I didn't stop demanding her to take action.

Wow was my blood boiling when she walked away. What kind of coward is Renee, more importantly, what kind of business is she running? Where when a customer who is still grieving brings a situation like this to her attention and she reacts as she did? Basically walking away from the situation trying to wash her hands of the situation and passing the buck to someone else.

Later in the day my wife did speak with the wife of the gentleman who runs the cemetery where Eileen is buried. We received assurances that the situation was being resolved tonight. We are going back Saturday to pay our proper respects.

Apparently the they have no backhoe and did the plots by shovel(hand) and stack the sod on top of the tombstones, to keep them from getting muddy. That's at least the answer we received.

I don't know much about cemetery regulations and what is allowed and not allowed, but this whole approach seems wrong. You don't pile a heap of dirt on a plot that has just been closed less than two months ago. And why in the world is the only way to keep dirt or mud off a tombstone to stack sod on top?

SHALLON WINERY in Astoria, Oregon

THE BUILDING AND THE WINERY:
SHALLON WINERY is located in downtown Astoria, Oregon, two blocks from the Maritime Museum and across the street from the Heritage Center. You will pass the winery at the bottom of the hill on 16th street if you come down 16th street from having visited the Astoria Column. The address is 1598 Duane Street, but the main entrance is on 16th street.
The winery building was built and owned by a well known architect, John E. Wicks, in 1925, after the Astoria fire in 1922, in the Mediterranean style for which there are other examples in Astoria. It first opened as an automotive showroom for Packard, Pontiac, and Oakland automobiles. In 1939 it was remodeled into a freezer-locker for the public and has six inches of solid cork in all the walls and under the concrete on the floor, and two feet of ground cork overhead. The sub-basement is at original Columbia river beach level which is below street level (after the 1922 fire, Astoria's wooden streets on pilings were returned to the original elevation with concrete chair-walls and concrete streets, leaving extensive underground chambers conveniently used for utilities).
The building remained a refrigerated locker rental business for 30 years until 1969. It was a bicycle shop from 1973 to 1977. The winemaker started a complete remodeling of the upper street level in 1977; the one floor now containing the manufacturing room, a full laboratory, office, storage room, printing room, tool room, and tasting room.
The tasting room looks out over the four to five mile width of the Columbia river and the green hills of Washington state across the river. The Columbia River flows west to the Pacific Ocean another ten miles. Visitors may also view the lab and manufacturing room that has a green floor, pink and grey walls, a lot of hospital white and stainless, and no windows except four "trope l'oeil" windows.
The "windows" view three things separated in time and space. One is of Fort Astoria as it actually would have looked through the winery window - if the window were there after 1811. One is of the airship Akron as viewed by Paul from Astoria when he was a youngster. The third view is of the Hawaiin Islands - at a great distance - in the direction they are from the winery. (The next two wineries southwest of Astoria are on Maui and on Hawaii.)
The TASTING and SALES room in the winery is open most every afternoon in the year, even Christmas and New Years. The sign says "1 to 6 p.m.," but as the winemaker gets older, the one o'clock opening gets pushed a little later. (365 days a year for some 26 years is devotion!) If Paul misses one day and can't get anybody to stand by for him, there will be a nasty note on the door, "We drove 200 miles to get to your winery, and you weren't open!"
You can call the winery at (503) 325-5978 or e-mail to paul@shallon.com

THE NAME OF THE WINERY:
The winemaker's favorite local wild plant is the Salal with it's flowers and unusual berries. The Latin name for Salal is Gaultheria shallon. Salal grows from southern Alaska to northern California usually west of the Coast Range mountains. It is used in landscaping and flower arrangements, much of its wild foliage is picked and shipped to florists throughout the country where it is known as "lemon-leaf". It grows all along the highways, low to the ground and again taller in the woods. It has a small urn shaped pinkish white drooping flower and a round black berry with not much juice. Half the people that grow up here do not know what it is, and the other half's mothers and grandmothers told them it is poisonous. The fruit is not poisonous; the Indians used it all the time; it makes an excellent jam, jelly, or pie, but we cannot make wine from it, because it needs to be diluted with water, and the government wouldn't let us add that much water to a wine. The evergreen leaves are sturdy and leathery, making nice Christmas wreaths, the older leaves dark green, the younger leaves light green.
This is a good botanical drawing of the Salal (Gaultheria shallon):

Tilamook Cheese Factory

Today we went to the Tilamook Cheese Factory. A pretty popular place right off the 101 in the town of Tilamook.

We got to sample some cheeses, including a new Garlic Cheddar and Pepper Cheddar.

I'll post some video of the factory later.

There are people that find it interesting to see the kiosks at facilities with errors or crashed. Well I report that one of the kiosks at the Tilamook Cheese visitor area had an error and dumped out to Windows. I'll post the screen picture later.

In Oregon

We are in Oregon for the next few days and the weather has been something to write about.

We have seen hail, snow, rain and sun. Cold! In the 30's at night and daytime maybe 40.

Today we had breakfast in Cannon Beach, a lovely place.

We then went on to Tilamook to see our Uncle and his new wife. Manolo and Sheila Garcia. They live on 3rd Street near the town center. They have a beautiful home that and she is a great cook. She didn't stop feeding us. What a great host and Manolo can carry a discussion on any topic. Today we discussed a book my Carroll Quigley, who carries many credentials and tells the histor of events. Tragedy and Hope: A History of the World in Our Time (1966) ISBN 094500110X

More to follow on our trip. Stay tuned.

Apple's Stock

Apple is doing an amazing job of exceeding investor expectations as illustrated by the performance of the stock. In one year the stock is approaching almost 300% growth. Many speculate that it will continue.

52 - Week Range
76.77 - 200.96
12/27/06 - 12/26/07

The iPod has become an integrated instrument of life for many of us. The iPhone is the latest introduction making great headway into that area as well. If the price comes down and the phone is sold unlocked to work on any network, WOW, that would be a major score for Apple!

Nokia is doing this and people are responding very favorably to this.

More to follow.

Leaving for Astoria

We are leaving for Astoria, OR in the morning.
Merry Christmas to everyone!

2007 Holiday Shopping Season

Reports are coming in that sales in 2007 are up only 19% over 2006 and that this year is one of the worse in the past five years.

December 26, the day after Christmas should offer some good sales as retailers attempt to make up some sales.

More details are coming in.

Bible on a pinhead!!!

Wow now this is pretty impressive.

Technion researchers have succeeded in putting a full version of the Hebrew Bible, with vowel points, on 0.5 square millimeters – an area smaller than the size of a pinhead.
The nano-Bible was written as part of an educational program developed by the Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute. The program aims to increase interest, on the part of youth, in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The idea to write the entire Bible on an area smaller than a pinhead was conceived of by Prof. Uri Sivan, head of the Nanotechnology Institute. The project was managed by physics’ doctoral student Ohad Zohar, the institute’s scientific advisor for educational programs, together with Dr. Alex Lahav, former head of the FIB laboratory in the Wolfson Microelectronics Research and Teaching Center.
The nano-Bible was written using a scientific device called FIB – Focused Ion Beam. With the aid of this device, it was possible to send focused beams of tiny particles (gallium ions) towards a specific object. When the particles hit the object, they cause the atoms of that object to bounce off of it, thus etching it. This is similar to digging a small hole in the earth using a water jet from a hose.
The nano-Bible was written on a silicon surface covered with a thin layer of gold (20 nanometers thick). “When we send the particle beam toward a point on the surface, the gold atoms bounce off of this point, thus exposing the silicon layer underneath. The diameter of the exposed point is about 40 nanometers. When we look at the written example using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), the exposed silicon point looks darker than the gold surrounding it. By sending a particle beam towards various points on the substrate, we can etch any pattern of points, especially one that represents text,” explains Ohad Zohar.
The structure of the nano-Bible was built using a special software developed in the project’s framework, which enables etching text on the surface layer.
The nano-Bible project is part of an educational program that asks the following question: “How small can the Bible be?” The program uses this intriguing question in order to investigate modern methods of creating miniature structures and imaging on a nanometric scale, to present advanced technology for high-density information storage and to discuss future topics such as information storage using DNA molecules or other bio-molecules.
“The fact that the Bible contains a lot of information (some 10 million bits) – is the main thing. We are aware of many ideas for high-density information storage, but almost always, an attempt to apply these ideas for large quantities of information exposes new challenges and, in the end, leads to deeper understanding of the proposed method and its limitations,” say the Technion researchers.
“The nano-Bible project demonstrates the ability of miniaturization at our disposal. We are working hard at present on photographing the nano-Bible using the SEM, with the aim of enlarging the photo by 10,000 times and displaying it on a giant wall in the Technion’s Faculty of Physics. In this picture, which will be 7 meters by 7 meters, it will be possible to read the entire Bible with the naked eye (the height of each letter will be some 3 millimeters. Near this picture, the original – the nano-Bible itself, which is the size a grain of sugar – will be displayed,” explains Ohad Zohar.

As McDonald's continues to deliver fast and friendly food service at more than 30,000 convenient locations around the world, you can now enjoy the possibility of staying connected with friends, family and co-workers. Just find a Wi-Fi ready Golden Arches (click here for Wi-Fi enabled locations in your area) and you can check e-mail or chat with your friends while your kids are having fun in the Playplace.

To access the Wi-Fi services in a restaurant, you need a Wi-Fi enabled device, such as a laptop or PDA. If you are unsure whether your laptop or PDA is Wi-Fi enabled, click here to determine what hardware is required.

Our local service providers provide high-quality Wi-Fi service through several convenient connection options: on-line credit card payment, subscriptions, prepaid cards, or (sometimes) promotional coupons. If you have questions or need technical help, the Wi-Fi provider's customer support number should be handy in the restaurant.

Please note that currently there are no roaming capabilities between different countries, neither for customers nor McDonald's employees. You will have to connect separately with the respective Wi-Fi service provider.

Enjoy surfing and working in your local McDonald's!

Toothbrush Sanitizer Germs: Germ Terminator Steam & Dry Heat Toothbrush Sanitizer

Now here's a product that has some uses in todays time of people being so concerned with germs.

Germ Terminator Toothbrush Sanitizer

The Germ Terminator Steam & Dry Heat Toothbrush Sanitizer and Clean Storage System (GT100 System) is the only FDA 510(k) cleared medical device of its kind designed for household use that kills greater than 99.9999% of all germs tested. After killing the germs on toothbrushes the system stores toothbrushes in a germ-free environment.

Here are the major bullet points regarding this fantastic, patented and revolutionary health-care system:

The GT100 System has been tested at three major independent laboratories.

Total kill rate against E. coli, staphylococcus aureus, salmonella, listeria, gingivalis, meningitidis, candida, herpes, HIV, flu virus, cold virus, hepatitis, and s. mutans.

The system is recommended by dentists, doctors, and dental hygienists.
Invented by James Song, author of the book "Why Your Toothbrush May Be Killing You Slowly

– How chronic, silent infections from toothbrush germs cause damaging, long-term and silent inflammation throughout the body."

Seen on TV by over 30 million people worldwide on PrimeTime Live with Diane Sawyer.
Approaching nearly one million units sold worldwide.

In a recent consumer study, over 92% of current GT100 customers would recommend the product to a family or friend.

Germ Terminator Toothbrush Sanitizer

When you hear it steam, you know it's clean. Finally, there is a safe, simple and completely effective solution to the dirty problem of toothbrush germs, and it makes perfect sense. There are actually a few methods floating around out there, but only one is the safest, most reliable, and most effective: the Germ Terminator Toothbrush Sanitizer. Using the Germ Terminator Toothbrush Sanitizer is hands-down the best way to make sure that your toothbrush is completely germ free. The Germ Terminator Toothbrush Sanitizer uses the proven power of steam to kill all germs, bacteria, viruses, fungi (molds and yeasts) and any other disgusting microbes that may have collected on your toothbrush. Most importantly, the Germ Terminator Toothbrush Sanitizer also provides a clean, germ-free environment where your toothbrush can be safely stored until the next time you use it.

The Germ Terminator Toothbrush Sanitizer is entirely unique with its patented steam-sanitization and germ-free storage system. Using the pre-measured Germ Terminator Toothbrush Sanitizer cup, you just add a little water to the sanitizing unit. The Germ Terminator Toothbrush Sanitizer generates a burst of continuous germ killing steam that safely, efficiently, and effectively wipes out greater than 99.9999% of all germs tested in major laboratory testing with absolutely no germs detected after any test! Again, all you need to do is add water!

You may have heard about other methods for cleaning your toothbrush, like soaking it in bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or mouthwash, boiling it, placing it in the dishwasher, exposing it to ultra-violet light radiation or ozone, or simply leaving it out to dry to get rid of the germs. A few of these techniques might work to kill some of the germs, but they are either essentially ineffective and/or potentially hazardous to your health.

With numerous worldwide patents and patents pending, the Germ Terminator Toothbrush Sanitizer is the most effective, natural, simplest to use and safest device ever created to sanitize your toothbrush. It takes only seconds of your time and it might be one of the most significant health decisions you can make for you and your family. It just makes sense. When it comes to something you put in your mouth, the bottom line is "CLEAN has got to be better than DIRTY". How can anyone argue with that logic?
