Water Bottled or Filtered

We think it's cleaner and safer, and we'll pay any price to get it, even though it comes out of faucets for a fraction of a cent. Author Elizabeth Royte talks to Kai Ryssdal about America's obsession with bottled water.

Elizabeth Royte's "Bottlemania: How Water Went on Sale and Why We Bought It" (Amazon.com)

TEXT OF INTERVIEW

Kai Ryssdal: If your supermarket's anything like mine, it's got an entire aisle devoted exclusively to water. Now, maybe I live in a very water-conscious neighborhood, I don't know, but I don't think that's the case because bottled water is a $60 billion a year industry.

But why? Why do so many of us pay so much for something we can literally get almost for free?

That's the question Elizabeth Royte set out to answer in her latest book "Bottlemania."

Elizabeth, good to have you with us.

Elizabeth Royte: Hi there.

Ryssdal: So let's get the first question out of the way right up front: Is bottled water necessarily better for us?

Royte: I wish I had a really straight simple answer for you...

Ryssdal: I was hoping you would.

Royte: Water is a really local and individual issue and in general, I will say that bottled water is no better or worse for you than tap water. Bottled water has basically the same level of contaminants -- things in it -- that tap water does and that the government allows to be in it. Bottled water is much less inspected than tap water, so that is one big difference.

Ryssdal: I can get water out of my tap in my kitchen for a couple of bucks per thousand gallons, right?

Royte: Um... the national average is about $2.50 for a thousand....

Ryssdal: Wait, wait. Was that you taking a sip of water in the middle of this water interview?

Royte: Yeah, yeah, sorry. I'm thirsty. I'm sipping tap water.

Ryssdal: Well, that's good then, and that goes to the question. I can turn on my tap and get, you know, a thousand gallons for a couple of bucks. Why then are people in this country and all over the world willing to pay so much on a relative scale for water that comes out of a bottle?

Royte: I think people are willing to pay more because they think that the water in the bottle is better. It took off because of very clever marketing that prayed on our ideas about health and wellness and beauty and weight loss and things like that and we were told that we needed to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and drink 8 ounce glasses a day and so portability became really important and that marketing worked really, really well. It turned bottled water from a $150 million a year industry in 1990 to a $11.5 billion a year industry in 2007.

Ryssdal: Back when I was a kid, the bottled water -- and there really was only one -- was Perrier, right? In pear-shaped green bottle and it was all the rage. Did it all start there?

Royte: Well, bottled water has been around for many centuries, but essentially, the bottle water craze in this country we can trace to that. It was 1977 when Perrier was introduced and it was very much a niche product at first. Yuppies drank it, it was an urban thing. Nobody was walking down the street with that pretty green glass bottle swigging it, but the water had a certain cache: it was French, it had those great bubbles and Orson Wells did the ads and so that started us thinking about celebrity and status and the big change, actually, isn't that dramatic. It was a technological innovation. In 1989, it became possible to put bottled water in bottles made of PET plastic -- that's the lightweight bottles -- and all of a sudden, it became much easier and cheaper to put water into these bottles and that's when the marketing tens of millions of dollars were spent pushing bottled water on us.

Ryssdal: You make your feelings pretty clear through the course of this book about the relative merits of tap water versus bottled water. I guess what I'm wondering though is do you have any real hope that the bottled water trend is going to change?

Royte: Well, first I want to say that my feelings changed over the course of the book. I wanted to find out how bottled water had become so popular and I realized that you can't really get into that without knowing what was right or wrong about tap water. I think people really don't know anything about where their water comes from. People don't know whether they're drinking groundwater or surface water, they don't know what's in their watershed and they just have a lot of questions about it and they don't go and find out what's in there and it's really easy to find... well, it's sort of easy to find out what is in your water. If you have any questions, test your water yourself. Shell out the money. I spent about $140, I ran all these tests and I was relieved. I was really happy to find out that my water was perfectly healthy to drink and as more people find out about the quality of their tap water, I think that they will stick with their tap water and fight to protect it.

Ryssdal: The latest book from Elizabeth Royte is called "Bottlemania: How Water Went on Sale and Why We Bought It." Elizabeth, thanks a lot for your time.

Royte: Thank you Kai.

Cheers! I tip my glass to you. While the hysteria over going green advances without regard for the necessary scientific links . . . it is good to hear a story that makes sense. dollars and cents. the most cost effective, safest and . . . yes environmentally friendly thing to do is to fill a reusable container from your own tap and tote it along with you. I raise my good old fashioned kitchen glass to you!

Study: Radio Airplay Increases Record Sales

Interesting story in Mediaweek regarding airplay and record sales by Katy Bachman

Study: Radio Airplay Increases Record Sales

The data shows that the when music airs on the radio, record sales go up

June 6, 2008

-By Katy Bachman

A new study demonstrating the symbiotic relationship between music aired on the radio and music sales is being circulated on Capitol Hill in support of a bill denouncing the notion of a performance tax, fee or royalty on radio broadcasters. Distributed to members of Congress late this week by the National Association of Broadcasters, the analysis, based on data from Nielsen and Pollstar, is the latest volley in the heated debate about whether there should be legislation to force broadcasters to pay musical performers for songs aired on the radio has been a flashpoint for broadcasters and the music artist community.

Two of the nation's biggest lobbyists, the National Association of Broadcasters and the Recording Industry Association of America, have been at each others' throats over the issue. A House Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet and Intellectual Property is set to hold hearings next week on the Performance Rights Act, introduced by Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.) that would levy new royalties on music airplay.

An opposing bill, the Local Radio Freedom Act, introduced in October by Reps. Gene Green (D-Tex.) and Mike Conaway (R-Tex.), has more than 200 bipartisan cosponsors.

Sales vs. Spins, is based on data from Nielsen, which tracks music sales via SoundScan and monitors airplay through Nielsen BDS; and Pollstar, a Fresno-Calif.-based company that tracks concert sales. In a series of line graphs, the data shows that the when music airs on the radio, record sales go up. Music airplay and sales were analyzed for 17 artists covering all genres and varying levels of success such as Velvet Revolver, U2, Rascal Flatts, Linkin Park, Green Day, Bruce Springsteen, The White Stripes, Taylor Swift and Josh Groban.

"There is a direct correlation between the number of 'spins' (plays on free, local radio) and the sales of albums or singles," the report concluded. "It is this promotion - free advertising - that drives record sales and represents just one of the many ways local radio provides value to artists and contributes to their financial and commercial success."

A thief in Paris planned to steal some paintings from the Louvre.

After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings, and made it safely to his van.

However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas.

When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied, 'Monsieur, that is the reason I stole the paintings.'

Hotwire vs hotwire

I'm looking for a rental car in Portland, OR June 27 and I went to Priceline and tried to make a bid, after dealing with the system prompts and filing everything out, three attempts later and still no deal.

I then went to Hotwire and in a couple clicks had a better price. So what is going on? Priceline used to be much better, are they falling behind in the deals they can make?

Pasadena Chalk Festival

WHAT: THE PASADENA CHALK FESTIVAL, the world’s largest street painting festival, will draw nearly 600 artists from across Southern California, who will use 25,000 sticks of pastel chalk to create spectacular murals on pavement the size of two city blocks! Amazing works of art from every style imaginable, classical to contemporary, whimsical and fantastic to socially relevant, will be created and shown over the course of the weekend. This one-of-a-kind public art event, now in its 16th year, is free-of-charge at Paseo Colorado. The most outstanding murals, as selected by the participating artists of the 2008 festival, winning jetBlue round trip tickets, along with other special awards from our sponsors, will be announced at the event’s conclusion. THE PASADENA CHALK FESTIVAL attracts artists and design teams from many regions of the country and virtually every Los Angeles-area community. Leading art schools, museums and cultural centers are also represented at the festival. Chalk benefits the community arts programs of the Light Bringer Project, a Pasadena-based nonprofit arts organization. WHEN: SATURDAY, JUNE 14 AND SUNDAY, JUNE 15 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.WHERE: Paseo Colorado located at 280 E. Colorado Blvd. Pasadena, CA 91101 (between Marengo and Los Robles Ave.) Murals on Garfield Promenade and Upper Fountain Court VISUALS: 600 talented artists of all ages and ethnicities - professionals, non-professionals and students Spectacular masterpieces created on pavement throughout Paseo Colorado’s beautiful Garfield Promenade and Upper Fountain Court Thousands of visitors – young and old - each day Madonnari Bistro featuring light fare and cocktails and proceeds benefiting the Light Bringer Project Live music representing many cultural influences Small painted canvases by festival chalk artists available for viewing and purchase at the Art Gallery

The Pasadena Chalk Festival began in 1993 after a summer intern at the Light Bringer Project attended a street painting festival in Paris and brought back her amazing pictures and observations. From there, the festival has grown to become the world’s largest street painting event, boasting more than 600 artists and 70,000 visitors each year. To view the winning murals of the 2007 Pasadena Chalk Festival, please click here. Below are some more fun and interesting facts about the festival that keeps artists and visitors alike coming back for more.
Chalk It Out! Festival Extremes
The very first festival in 1993 drew 125 eager artists, while the 2005 festival was the largest ever with 621 artists.
Local Pasadena artists may travel a mile or less to get to the festival, but artist Gary Palmer once traveled roughly 5,200 miles – all the way from Ireland – to participate.
The youngest festival participant ever was Sasha Martinez – he completed his first individual mural at the tender age of seven! Sasha is now a junior in high school and created a mural for the 2006 festival. The oldest festival artist is unknown, though there are many participants in their 50’s and beyond.
Chalk By the Numbers…And the Colors
Festival artists use more than 25,000 sticks of chalk during the two-day festival.
Blue is the most popular color used (8,000 sticks used every year!), as it serves as the under-drawing base tint, followed closely by black and white.
Brown, beige, fuchsia and orange are the least popular chalk colors.
Artists at the festival learn to barter with others in order to get the chalk colors they need…and to make new friends!
Chalk It All Up to Hard Work and Planning
Some muralists create their chalk paintings in about eight hours, while for some of the true masterpieces of the festival, artists utilize all 20-plus hours of daylight that the festival weekend allows.
The largest mural ever created at the festival featured a giant red squid – whose tentacles extended more than 20 feet. Team members wore red squid-eye t-shirts to motivate them to complete their “giant task!”

Over 700 artists using chalk as their medium and concrete as their canvas created spectacular murals at the 2007 PASADENA CHALK FESTIVAL. Against the beautiful outdoor village style setting of Paseo Colorado, visitors from all over watched a new generation of artists design their chalk murals in a variety of styles from classical to contemporary, whimsical and fantastic to socially relevant.
For centuries artists (known in Italy as “Madonnari” or street painters) have painted beautiful images on the boulevards and squares of great cities, using the pavements as the street surfaces as their canvas. After World War II, scores of itinerant artists made their living from the unique art of street painting.
Currently prestigious cultural festivals in Europe, North and South America celebrate this traditional art form and have become popular attractions for artists, art lovers and people from all walks of life.
Now in its 16th year, the PASADENA CHALK FESTIVAL is the largest in the world by sheer numbers of participating artists. In fact, previous festivals have attracted artists and design teams from many regions of the country, across Southern California, and virtually every Los Angeles-area community. Leading art schools, museums and cultural centers are also represented at the festival.
PASADENA CHALK FESTIVAL is produced by Paseo Colorado and the Light Bringer Project, as a financial benefit for the nonprofit arts organization, raising proceeds for vital arts and learning programs in the schools and cultural opportunities for those of all ages. Each artist will volunteer up to 20 hours of his or her talent and energies to make this possible.

Absolut officially joined the chalk event as title sponsor. All the artists participated in creating a large centerpiece mural, each drawing in a square foot of space, to the outline of the signature Absolut bottle shape.
Chalk it Up, 1996, West Hollywood Park (at Pacific Design Center)Over 300 artists participated in West Hollywood, raising dollars for community arts programs and homeless support services. HUNDREDS OF MUSICIANS FROM ALL MUSICAL BACKGROUNDS

GATHER TO MAKE MUSIC IN PASADENA

Saturday, June 21, 2008

10 a.m. - 10 p.m.

Downtown Pasadena, California

PASADENA, CA (MAY 2008) - Downtown Pasadena will be filled with more than 300 free concerts held simultaneously on World Music Day for the first ever Make Music Pasadena, a Fête de la Musique event, Saturday, June 21, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Presented in part by Levitt Pavilions Free Music across America and public radio station KCRW 89.9FM, Make Music Pasadena will showcase Grammy Award nominees, platinum-recording artists, along with homegrown and emerging talent. Billed as Southern California's largest free music festival, Make Music Pasadena will feature internationally known performers including The Raveonettes, Kinky, Dengue Fever and many more.

This free all-day, all-ages music festival brings an adventurous mix of hundreds of professional and amateur musicians who will perform in more than 30 unconventional performance spaces such as city buses, sidewalks, parks, courtyards, alleys and building lobbies. Other sites will include some of Pasadena's most recognized cultural institutions such as City Hall and local museums.

This festival of sound will feature an eclectic main stage line up presented by Levitt Pavilions Free Music across America and public radio station KCRW 89.9FM. Artists include acclaimed Cambodian psychedelic rock sensation Dengue Fever, platinum selling jazz artist Bobby Rodriguez, two time Latin Grammy Award nominee Nortec Collective presents Bostich + Fussible, Grammy Award Nominee Kinky, hot French export The Plastiscines, Danish duo The Raveonettes, Los Angeles natives Everest, Division Day, The Little Ones, Jesca Hoop and many more.

"A partnership between Levitt Pavilions and Make Music Pasadena is a natural fit as both organizations present free music concerts to build community and create cultural understanding through music," said Elizabeth Levitt Hirsch, VP of the Mortimer Levitt Foundation. "Levitt Pavilions, Free Music across America is thrilled to support Make Music Pasadena to celebrate the power of music as a social connector and inform the thousands who will attend on June 21 that outstanding, diverse music performances, free of charge, will continue throughout the summer at the Levitt Pavilions in both Pasadena and MacArthur Park in Los Angeles."

Expected to draw record crowds, Make Music Pasadena is the West coast premier of international music phenomenon Fête de la Musique, which takes place simultaneously in more than 300 cities, 108 countries and five continents around the world. Fête de la Musique began in France in 1982 as a way to promote all kinds of music while encouraging the public to delve into their own artistic talents. The event aims to popularize musical practices for all ages and from all cultural and social backgrounds while creating an opportunity to communicate and share a very special connection through music.

Make Music Pasadena is presented in part by Levitt Pavilions Free Music across America and is produced by One Colorado, Old Pasadena Management District, Playhouse District Association, Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena Convention & Visitors Bureau, Pasadena Arts Council, Alliance Française de Pasadena, French Cultural Services in Los Angeles and FLAX (France Los Angeles Exchange).

Conversations with Tom Boellstorff author of Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human: http://press.princeton.edu/chapters/s8647.html

Millions of people around the world today spend portions of their lives in online virtual worlds. Second Life is one of the largest of these virtual worlds. The residents of Second Life create communities, buy property and build homes, go to concerts, meet in bars, attend weddings and religious services, buy and sell virtual goods and services, find friendship, fall in love--the possibilities are endless, and all encountered through a computer screen. Coming of Age in Second Life is the first book of anthropology to examine this thriving alternate universe. Tom Boellstorff conducted more than two years of fieldwork in Second Life, living among and observing its residents in exactly the same way anthropologists traditionally have done to learn about cultures and social groups in the so-called real world. He conducted his research as the avatar "Tom Bukowski," and applied the rigorous methods of anthropology to study many facets of this new frontier of human life, including issues of gender, race, sex, money, conflict and antisocial behavior, the construction of place and time, and the interplay of self and group.

Coming of Age in Second Life shows how virtual worlds can change ideas about identity and society. Bringing anthropology into territory never before studied, this book demonstrates that in some ways humans have always been virtual, and that virtual worlds in all their rich complexity build upon a human capacity for culture that is as old as humanity itself. Private Viewing of LIVE What is the meaning of "live" when the majority of our day-to-day interactions are so mediated? LIVE featuresnine artists who sample and transform data, photographs and video from the Internet and incorporate it into their sculptures and installations.Either extracting live footage or transmitting data in real time, they cull from diverse sources including Congressional speeches from C-Span,websites with Iraqi war casualties, a critique of consumerism from a peer-to-peer network and on-line video surveillance. As the artists isolate ideas and images from the steady stream of unrelenting data, they produce thought-provoking, aesthetic and "live" works of art. Sponsored by:
