Online Advertising - Getting Up Close and Personal:
How new avenues for advertising will influence
the buying decisions of the consumer

More Information here: http://www.entforum.caltech.edu/

Saturday, May 10, 2008

As the Web rolls onward in Web 2.0 (or is it 3.0?) the business models and infrastructure of online commerce and advertising continue to evolve rapidly. With more and more advertising dollars shifting to the Web and mobile applications, will advertising become more targeted to the individual and their physical location? Will localized search and targeted advertising be able to track advertising intelligently to you, your mobile device and your proximity to products and services? Today's program will examine coming advances in Web 2.0 and other key issues in technology and business impacting the future of online advertising, new media and mobile commerce. Is mobile advertising the next major landgrab in online commerce? Who will be the winners in the convergence of the Web, television and mobile? Are the Big Players or small nimble startups the best bet?

Today's event will feature presentations from key industry executives, longtime wireless industry advisors, serial entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. It will start with keynote presentations and company presentations from cutting edge startups and be followed by a panel discussion and plenty of audience Q&A. Please join us to find out where the industry is headed first hand.

Caltech Enterprise Forum Audio

Congratulations to the folks at the Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum on putting together another great event.

The event was packed!

You can listen to event here

Jason Feffer CEO/Founder of SodaHead.com did the Keynote.

Mark Jeffrey CTO of Mahalo.com was the venture discussed.

Then the panelists:
Joe Jasin of SK Telecom International - talked about how the deal with MySpace was not as fruitful as they would have liked. Basically the US is behind Asia in telecom.

Tony Karrer - CEO/CTO with TechEmpower -

Stuart MacFarlane - Managing Director with Momentum Venture Management - the money guy!

Andrew Shaindlin - Executive Director - Caltech Alumni Association - from the academic perspective - Andy talked about his approach and what is missing for education and non-profits in the social space. Bottom line they are looking for a way to participate in the ownership of the audience.

As a business and investment vehicle, is it farfetched to credit social networking with value and staying power? The rise and demise of Friendster begs the question whether MySpace will be similarly dethroned by FaceBook. Meanwhile, might LinkedIn emerge as "tortoise" in the race? And might one of today's many soc-net startup alternatives emerge to be the Google of the genre? Whatever you thought were answers, the appearance of OpenSocial as a platform giving common access between entrepreneurs and network members adds a dimension threatening to squelch the skeptics. For example, by adopting this model (long ago used by dBase-Lotus), Facebook has cultivated thousands of third party applications.

Our keynote speakers and panelists will look at the soc-net paradigm from the vantage point of successful entrepreneurs and investors in this arena. They will wrestle with the many-faceted answers to these and related questions.

Caltech Enterprise Forum: Content is King

This past weekend I attended the Caltech/MIT Enterprise forum in Pasadena.

Here's the release about the forum.

"Content is King"
Matching Entertainment Technologies with Artistic Content

Saturday, October 13, 2007

at the California Institute of Technology
Pasadena, California
Registration and Continental Breakfast:
8:00 a.m. Baxter Hall
Program: 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Baxter Lecture Hall
Networking: 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Baxter Lecture Hall
Cost: $40 ($10 for students with full-time student ID; free to Caltech students)

With the explosion of technological developments of the last decades, many new technologies have vied for positions in the entertainment industry. Whether the entertainment technologies are blockbusters like videotapes or DVDs or "merely" software platforms, history has taught us that the technology that wins the business competition is not always the highest performing or even least expensive technology. Rather, it is usually the technology that is coupled to the most compelling entertainment or artistic content that grabs hold and survives in the marketplace.

The October 13, 2007 session of the Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum will explore the process by which technology entrepreneurs can match up their inventions with artistic talent in order to reach the marketplace. Doing so successfully requires a knowledge of the relevant entertainment industry, its structure, and its distribution channels, as well an understanding of how to meld the culture of the technologist with that of the artist. Our panel of speakers for this session will include individuals who have "been there, done that," including one Oscar® winner. They will bring to us their insights as to the critical elements for success and the means by which the technology entrepreneur can put those elements together.
