sprtcmd.exe

Dell installs this program for the Dell Support Center. and when you go to reboot now I have to end now on Sprtcmd.exe. The computer will hang unless you end now as soon as it comes up when you are trying to shutdown or restart.

Here's someone with the same problem and what they did to uninstall.

Problems with this darn Dell Support program, and for the first time I can actually help.
Said another program had "exclusive rights" or something of that order. Here is how I got around it. Press Control, Alt, and Delete and call up the Task Manager. Select the "Processes" tab, and hunt down the freaking "sprtcmd.exe". You will find it! Click the header to row to sort by name. It is in that list. Select it with the mouse and choose END PROCESS button down at the bottom right of the screen. NOW that that stupid thing is ended, do your thing with the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and it WILL (did for me) un-install and all of your problems will be gone.

Thanks,
Victor Caballero

I use a terminal emulator to access a program on our Sun Server. After I returned from vacation, it would not run. It would hang. Killed the procees for sprtcmd.exe with the task manager. Then, I uninstalled sprtcmd.exe which was called "Dell Support Center" support software. Now things are working fine. Thank you Victor.

Hey Victor,

Thank you for that straightforward and effective solution in getting rid of this pesky sprtcmd.exe file. I tried a number of solutions provided by other users but the problem seemed to linger. It took me a while to find your blog but it was all worth the wait. Thanks again, Victor. You definitely made my day.

Victor,

Thanks for the information. Also, thanks to anonymous on 10/19/08 at 8:31 a.m. Would have not know that it was called "Dell support Center." I really hate when companies do that.

Thanks Victor. Worked like a charm. Why can't Dell figure these things out?

Victor,

I'm having the same problem but I just wanted to make sure I don't need the Dell Support Center before I get rid of it.

Victor: I also have the same issue with sprtcmd.exe. I called Dell and the were able to take control of my pc and disabled Dell Support from startup using msconfig. I then asked for them to remove the programme which they did, using Windows uninstall program, as I wasn't using the program. After I shut down, I had the same problem and had to manually end sprtcmd.exe. Do I need to now reinstall Dell support program and follow the directions you have described above?

Thank you for this information. I support a Medical Office, and suddenly one of their new Dell PCs would no longer open their Office Hours Appointment Scheduling program. I stopped the sprtcmd.exe process in Task Manager, and tried starting the Office Hours program again, and it now works fine. Needless to say, I immediately uninstalled the Dell Support Center software. I had tried so many things previously, all to no avail. Thank you Victor.

Oh My God I have literally spent hours calling lifting Dell support thru tinyurl.com 45x45. Messing with Microsoft. Messing with Symmantec. You're instructions removed my problem in 5 min. Dell wanted to charge me big dollars. Thank You Thank You Thank You!!

God Bless You!!!
Not only did I have that sprtcmd.exe error on my computer every time I tried to shut down, I also had the problem of not being able to open any of my Microsoft Word 2003 documents from their icons. I had to open the Word program first and then scroll through everything to get the document I needed. What a pain! I originally thought these 2 problems were unrelated, but it turns out that uninstalling the Dell Support Center fixed them both. Thank you so much Victor!!

I'm about to try your solution, Victor, and I appreciate it even before trying!
Dell: What idiocy! For the past week or so Dell Support Center (support software) tries to install, without success. Meanwhile, it constipates the computer. It takes roughly 78 cancels to stop the annoyance. Don't you test this stuff before inflicting it on purchasers of your computers?

Thanks for the solution. I was wondering why the hell suddenly this error is popping up, and stopping my computer from shutting down.

The solution worked very well and I can live peacefully again.

I finally solved the error message SPRTCMD.EXE not responding when attempting to shut down Windows XP. I did not have to remove any programs. I simply used the Dell Support Ctr. After opening the Support Ctr. I clicked self help, then clicked "Troubleshooting and FAQ." I then typed in "sprtcmd.exe" in the appropriate area. This brought up Hot Topic: "How do I resolve the error message sprtcmd.exe not responding?" I clicked on this link and it took me to the solution. NET FRAMEWORK VERSION 2 download. I just followed the directions and it took care of the problem ...my computer shuts down quickly!!!

Thank you for posting this.

Amazing that a large company like Dell would foist such an awful chunk of code on so many people.

Or maybe this isn't so amazing?

If you want to continue to use the Dell Support Center, it needs Microsoft .net framework 2.0. If you have the earlier version of .net framework, sprtcmd.exe will hang on shutdown. You can look this up on the Dell support site. Get .net framework 2.0 from Microsoft update. Install it, the problems with sprtcmd.exe will be over.

Finally! A solution. Thank you so much. This is my roommate's computer, and she is not tech savvy. She was just living with this hanging sprtcmd which required an "End Now" every time the computer shut down. She's out of town, and thanks to you , I got rid of this thing. Thank you!

BLESS You Victor - this simple solution saved me. Something was running and running - accessing the disk constantly so that performance was degraded to useless. In task manager however, system idle kept showing as 98-99, so I was mystified about what could be hogging the system. I ended sprtcmd.exe like you advised, and the constant disk accessing stopped. I uninstalled Dell Nightmare Support and now all is well. What a relief. Thank you.

don't know if anyone else mentioned this but this file is also used by "Comcast Desktop Doctor" if you do not have a Dell but have this file, deleted the Doctor program and you'll get your computer back :)
